International Singing Competition - ENROLMENT FORM

 

REGULATION:

Art. 1 - ISTITUTO EUROPEO organises its seventh International Singing Competition reserved exclusively for non-Italian singers.


Art. 2
 - The goal of the competition is the production of a public performance.


Art. 3
 - The winners will be assigned their perspective roles for a performance based on some scenes of the opera Il Tabarro by Giacomo Puccini (the Ricordi edition will be adopted).


Art. 4
 - The competition will take place in Florence, at ISTITUTO EUROPEO, during the days Monday, January 5, 2007, beginning at 9 a.m.
Jury: Fabio Lombardo (director of the choir “L’Homme Armé” of Florence and expert in polyphony); Simone Ori (pianist and conductor); Susanna Rigacci (soprano, vocal coach and specialist in “voice engineering”); Rinaldo Romagnoli (director of Istituto Europeo); Elisabetta Sepe (pianist, conductor and choir director, teacher at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica di Latina); Elisabetta Torselli (musicologist and music critic at the daily national newspaper “Il Corriere di Firenze”).

Art. 5 - The singing competition requires: one soprano (for the role of Giorgetta), one mezzosoprano (for the role of Frugola), one tenor (for the role of Luigi), one tenor (for the role of Tinca), one tenor (for the role of Venditore di canzonette), one baritone (for the role of Michele), and one basso (for the role of Talpa). The competitors will have prove that they have a good knowledge of the entire role they want to present; the Jury may ask them to perform not only the airs but also concertatos. They will be accompanied by a collaborating pianist signed out by ISTITUTO EUROPEO.


Art. 6
 - The competitors must present themselves punctually with a document of identification (ID-card or passport).


Art. 7
 - To apply for admission to the competition the candidates have to:

• Complete the enrolment form.
• Present a “curriculum of studies” or resumè.
• Attach a copy of the receipt of payment of 100 Euro * participation fee, to be paid by:

  1. Euro-Cheque;
  2. International Money Order;
  3. Bank Check-
    to be sent to: ISTITUTO EUROPEO - Piazza delle Pallottole, 1 (Duomo) - 50122 Firenze - Italia.

* The participation fee is not refundable in case of cancellation or absence


Art. 8
 - The application for admission and the documents mentioned in art. 7 have to be sent by registered letter (which can also be anticipated by a copy via fax) within the December 15th, 2006 (the latest date for postage).


Art. 9
 - The winners will be given a scholarship for an intensive course of Italian language from January 7-30, 2007 at the ISTITUTO EUROPEO.


Art. 10
 - The winners will participate in a “Laboratory” of theatrical, musical and linguistic (perfection of pronunciation) preparation to carry out the concert. The “Laboratory” will take place from January 7-27, 2006.
The performances, which will be open to the public and the press, will take place on January 28- 30, 2006 in an important historical and cultural locality in Florence.

 


For more than ten years, the Music Department of the ISTITUTO EUROPEO has carried out an intense didactical and productive activity by offering high-level professional courses and monthly concerts, both inside ISTITUTO EUROPEO and in important historical places. Lessons take place at the Institute, where there are 5 classrooms with pianos.

*M1 Course on the history of Italian music
From the Middle Ages to the development of polyphony – Madrigals and the origins of [the] melodrama - C. Monteverdi - The 17th century - Instrumental music between the 17th and the 18th century - Vivaldi and the violin culture - The 18th century and G. Rossini – Belcanto - G. Verdi – Verismo - G. Puccini and the 20th century - The revival of instrumental music - Contemporary composers - The new musical theatre.

*M2 Course on the history and language of the melodrama
From madrigalistic comedy to the Recitar cantando - C. Monteverdi – Comic and serious opera (from the 17th until the 18th century) - The Neapolitan School and Neoclassicism - G. Rossini - V. Bellini, G. Donizetti and belcanto - G. Verdi – Melodrama after Verdi and Verismo - G. Puccini – Opera after Puccini and contemporary composers.

M3 Course in musical melodrama with a strong focus on the interpretation of operatic roles
A pianist who is a specialist in the study of opera repertoire, helps singers learn the dramatic and musical aspects of the operatic roles. 

*M4 Course on opera libretti
An experienced teacher guides the students through the reading and the understanding of the libretti and their specific language. After a historical-literary introduction students will analyse excerpts from different operas to understand their specific characteristics.

M5 Course on vocal technique for lyrical singers
The body is the sound box of the voice. Guided by a professional in vocal technique, the students improve their respiration and learn the correct use of the muscles in order to obtain better sound emission. The course is meant for all students and professionals who want to specialize in lyric repertory.

M6 Course on vocal music of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque
For those who are interested in specializing in ancient Italian repertory, with particular attention to Italian madrigal literature.

M7 Course on the interpretation of chamber lyrics
From the 17th century of Giulio Caccini until today: the students closely examine Italian vocal chamber repertory.

M8 Course on Neapolitan music
A specialist in this particular repertory guides the students through the interpretation and the technical requirements of Neapolitan song.

M9 Instrumental Music Course new1
Violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, recorder, oboe, tuba, guitar, and so on… This course is ideal for beginners who would like the opportunity to try a new instrument by having a short 'taster' series of lessons to learn some basic skills. Our experienced staff will ensure that your first experience of your new instrument is an enjoyable one!
We also cater for university/conservatoire students and professionals who wish to develop their skills on a particular instrument or prepare specific repertoire for auditions or performance.
If you are unable to bring your instrument, or wish to try a new instrument during your time at Istituto Europeo, we can hire instruments for you here in Florence.

M10 Course on diction for singers
A vocal specialist corrects the diction and teaches the dynamic of the vocal emission by using the correct pronunciation of the Italian phonemes.

M11 Course in piano accompaniment
A specialist in piano accompaniment guides the students in analyzing and interpreting the score.

M12 Course in elementary / advanced piano playing

The course is meant for people who would like to start or improve playing the piano.

M13 Preparatory Course for Admission to Conservatories and Music Schools, and for Professional Auditionsnew1
Students will be asked to take a language placement test and to audition before the courses begin, in order to determine the most adequate level of instruction.
The M13 program is a series of Italian language and personalized music courses which prepare music and vocal students for entrance exams/auditions to any Italian or foreign Music Institute. Our instructors are internationally recognized musicians and singers. Under their guidance, our students have successfully been admitted to the L. Cherubini Conservatory in Florence, the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, Accademia d'Arte Lirica di Osimo, the Choir of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the G. Verdi Conservatory of Milan and the Conservatories of Amsterdam and Tokyo.

This 4 week program is comprised of a total of 120 lessons of instruction. Courses are held from Monday-Friday and are divided into 80 lessons of Italian in the mornings and 40 lessons of practical and theoretical music courses in the afternoon.

*M14 English For Musicians: a specialized course for working musiciansnew1
This course is intended to provide non-native English speaking musicians with the necessary skills to participate in musical activities where English would be the main language for communication. The course will be taught only in English, by a native English speaker and conservatoire-trained professional musician. The 'English for Musicians' course can be included as part of the M13 program. Course content will include:

Specific music-related vocabulary – Practical English for rehearsing, teaching and performing –Writing a Curriculum Vitae/resume, concert biography and job application – Using musical terminology for academic purposes – Building confidence at communicating in English.

Ideally students should already have an intermediate level of general English (written and spoken) and some knowledge of the concepts of music theory.

*M15 Chamber Music Coursenew1
This course is designed for musicians of all levels who would like the experience of developing their ensemble playing skills in a friendly and relaxed environment. On arrival students will be placed in ensembles and receive coaching from an experienced chamber music teacher, with a performance opportunity at the end of the course. No prior experience of group playing is required: enthusiasm is equally important!

If you are unable to bring your instrument, or wish to try a new instrument during your time at Istituto Europeo, we can hire instruments for you here in Florence.

Adult Music Programs for Singers
Are you interested in singing and Italian culture? Would you like to develop your musical skills  whilst spending time in the beautiful city of Florence? Perhaps you have thought about taking some individual singing lessons but have never had the time to try? Then this is the course for you!
The music courses at Istituto Europeo are designed for both amateurs and professionals: the most important thing is enthusiasm and your love of music. We run vocal courses for groups and individuals, and can also arrange lessons for your choir with leading Italian vocal coaches. Whether you are here as part of a group or as an individual, our friendly and experienced teachers will ensure that your lessons are appropriate for your voice type, musical experience and personal objectives, and you can decide together on a program of study suitable for your needs. For individuals there could also be the possibility to sing in small chamber ensembles with other students, which can be organized after your arrival in Florence. Another important feature of the program is that we can arrange performance opportunities for you either here at Istituto Europeo or in venues around Florence to showcase your work.
The music program at Istituto Europeo also includes instrumental lessons, which can be taken together with the vocal course. Like our vocal courses these are appropriate for musicians of all levels: we even offer 'taster' sessions if you have considered learning a new instrument and would like the chance to try, even if you have never studied instrumental music before! It is possible to hire an instrument here in Florence.
